The Healthcare Logistics Barrier in Eastern Province

In rural Sierra Leone, especially within the undulating rainforest topography surrounding Kenema, the primary impediment to safe maternal delivery is rarely clinical hesitation — it is geographic isolation. When obstetric complications emerge in peripheral settlements, community health workers (CHWs) previously operated blind to real-time transport bottlenecks.

Monsoon rain patterns routinely wash away non-gazetted feeder tracks, turning a theoretical 45-minute motorcycle transfer into a 4-hour ordeal. Without centralized spatial telemetry and dynamic catchment modeling, dispatch coordinators at referral hospitals could neither project arrival timelines nor deploy medical oxygen in advance.

Building the MaternityCare Geospatial Pipeline

Designing architecture that withstands 3G fluctuations in sub-Saharan rural hubs requires strict prioritization of payload size and offline-first computation. The pipeline below computes emergency catchment zones around each clinic before any request ever leaves the device.

pipeline/catchment.py
import geopandas as gpd
from shapely.geometry import Point

# Compute 15km emergency catchment polygon
def generate_catchment(clinic_lat, clinic_lon, radius_km=15):
    clinic_point = Point(clinic_lon, clinic_lat)
    gdf = gpd.GeoDataFrame(geometry=[clinic_point], crs="EPSG:4326")
    projected = gdf.to_crs(epsg=32629)  # UTM Zone 29N, Sierra Leone
    catchment = projected.buffer(radius_km * 1000)
    return catchment.to_crs(epsg=4326)

On the client side, our custom Leaflet rendering engine loads cached raster fallback tiles if vector layer websocket connections drop mid-session, so field workers never see a blank map during an active dispatch.

“In healthcare technology, coordinates aren't just points on a map; they are lifelines connecting patients to timely clinical care.”

Key Lessons for African Developers Building Local Tech

Assume Zero Connectivity by Default

IndexedDB queues and local synchronization protocols ensure zero maternal intake records are lost mid-transfer.

Satellite Imagery Isn't Enough

It does not reveal seasonal washouts or broken bridges — real accuracy happens when CHWs update trail passability directly from the field.

Strip Bloated Map Extensions

Lightweight SVG canvas overlays outperform 15MB WebGL tiles on standard $60 Android devices.
